A Man
Reflecting the Cinematic Experience: Unveiling the Movie Logo and Title Sequence of Acclaimed Japan Academy Award Film

A Man is a movie based on the work of critically acclaimed Japanese novelist Keiichiro Hirano. Director Kei Ishikawa has been gaining notoriety in Japan and internationally. We worked on the movie logo and title sequence design.
Design Inspired by the Movie’s Engaging and Compelling Storyline

A Man asks who “I” truly is. The movie explores the theme that there are multiple personalities within one person and the aggregate of those personalities are a person. If a wife’s beloved husband is revealed to be a completely different person, can she still love him?

After watching the movie, we wondered if the people close to us have one personality which they show to everyone, or if their personality might be changing depending on the situation. This was interpreted typographically as even typefaces can have multiple personalities. We aimed to combine the expressive Japanese Mincho type style and a more geometric
Gothic style into one. This led us to explore the elusive midpoint between those contrasting two styles. To bring the idea to life, custom software was written to generate a motion graphic which morphs between
Gothic and Mincho type styles. The title starts with a Gothic style font, which transitions to our custom-designed Gothic/Mincho style before finally changing into a Mincho style.
