Japanese Red Cross Society
&Form worked closely with the Japanese Red Cross Society in retelling its history and promoting its activities, through redesigning the entrance at the Tokyo headquarters, producing its first special publication, and the “Forever Remembered” campaign.
In all aspects, We took into consideration the Japanese Red Cross Society’s principles of “humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality,” and sought to use preexisting material. For the entrance redesign, We removed various advertisement posters and panels to make way for visually powerful banners featuring the iconic red cross and red crescent that were hung from the ceiling. The original busts of the two founders H Dunant and T Sano were positioned to flank the entrance door.
For the English, French, and Japanese trilingual publication, We created a historic narrative through photographs retracing the footsteps of Dunant. Essays and a map of the historic sites were included in the book, and later featured on a website and a mobile phone app. Upon the completion of the catalogue, the photographs were shown in exhibition.
We were involved in the art direction and design of the “Forever Remembered” campaign, which sought to bring attention once again to past natural disasters in Japan such as the 1995 Hanshin earthquake and 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Executed in print and digitally, emphasis was placed on the use of text to convey the voices of people of various walks of life - a mother, an athlete, a nurse, a teacher, and students.
