TOKYO Gallery - VI
Founded in 1950, renewing the visual identity of Japan‘s first contemporary art gallery
The website for Tokyo Gallery which opened in 1950 and is currently active in Tokyo and Beijing. As Japan‘s first contemporary art gallery, it was among the first to introduce western contemporary artists including Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Jackson Pollock and Hundertwasser, as well as Jiro Takamatsu, Kazuo Shiraga and Taro Okamoto, who later led Japanese contemporary art. As a global gallery that has received high acclaim internationally, we worked on the total design with a focus on high-quality branding.

The Roman numeral ‘7‘ and the Chinese numeral ‘7’ interweave both Western Europe and Asia, resulting in a bold, strong, and simple design. The advertisement utilizes photographs of galleries in Ginza from the time of its establishment in 1950, along with letters and photographs exchanged with each artist. While reflecting on the gallery‘s history, the exhibition catalog categorizes the exhibitions and showcased works into the first and second halves, aiming to create a composition that is mindful of tension and modernity.
Tokyo Gallery — Shoichi Kaneda Exhibition
Project:
The key visual and invitation card for the exhibition called “Our House” by Shoichi Kaneda at Tokyo Gallery, Japan’s first contemporary art gallery. This project is part of the overall branding project &Form completed.
Execution:
The main artwork expresses the essence of human beings wandering society in search of profits through its use of a children’s pedal car made with inexpensive, everyday materials and decorated with stickers created by the artist. We designed a collection of disjointed typefaces which are similar to the works of the artist which lampoon society. The characters lack grace, and were intentionally created with an irregular and consumerist appearance.
